![]() ![]() Despite the losses they have suffered - Lina's father and sister were killed in the war, while Feroza's entire family perished, save for her grandmother - the girls find a way to be generous and loving with one another, modeling the best of the human spirit for young readers and listeners. ![]() The narrative is simple but immensely effective, painting a picture of two young children caught up in terrible events well beyond their control. ![]() I found myself immensely moved while reading this story, which would make an excellent picture-book companion to books like Deborah Ellis's The Breadwinner and Parvana's Journey, which offer stories for older children about the turmoil in war-torn Central Asia, and the experience of Afghani refugees. From this beginning, friendship develops, but when Lina and her family are given permission to resettle in America, the two girls face being parted. At first each girl keeps her sandal to herself, but eventually they decide to share the pair, alternating days. When relief workers pass out used clothing, Lina finds one yellow sandal with a blue flower on it, but discovers that its companion has been claimed by Feroza. Lina and Feroza have both fled war-torn Afghanistan with their families, heading for the relative safety of nearby Pakistan. Co-authors Karen Lynn Williams and Khadra Mohammed spin an immensely poignant tale of two girls living in a refugee camp in Four Feet, Two Sandals. ![]()

It was so callous and gave me chills.Įmma’s writing is gorgeous, however. The hangings, them being Jack’s fault and him bearing that guilt, oh my. I would have liked to see Jack reunited with his family though.Īt some points it got incredibly dark, much darker than I expected of a middle grade novel, to be honest. I’m glad the book had a happy ending! I appreciated that. The backstory of the Gearwing kind of lost me, that’s where I had trouble finishing the book. I would have really liked to know more about The Lady and Lorcan and their story (how they created Londinium, where they came from) but alas this book was not about them. Beth was fun, I liked her too, she was a great help to Jack in this new and exciting land. He took to being in an alternate London quite easily. ![]() I liked Jack, he was a spunky child with some badassery in him. The author massively underestimates self preservation as a motivation. ![]() The claim that the Londoners rejected her based solely off gender is silly as it is mentioned several times that London was loyal to Stephen, if for no other reason that Stephen and his brother controlled access to the main shipping harbor in France. ![]() The author is aghast that Matilda had the better claim and yet some Barons supported Stephen when her own father, King Henry I, "stole" the crown from his older brother, Robert - who, of course, had a stronger claim. In fact there are countless contemporary examples. Based on the author's argument you would think no crown was ever "stolen", no kingdom contested, no barons rebelled, and London never gave any ruler of England a hard time. However the author's entire thesis, that Empress Matilda was a shining light of medieval leadership and only her gender kept her from becoming Queen, or "female king" as she refers to the title is a problem. The author presents a nice narrative of the anarchy, the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments The pursuit of god audio![]() ![]() Some people argued that Christians can pursue wealth and still serve God, while others believe that the pursuit of wealth can lead to a loss of focus and connection to God.īuchi, who is known for his motivational talks and coaching sessions, has been vocal about his Christian faith and the importance of living a purposeful life. I mean, there's absolutely no relationship between this and Watchers, right? There isn't a dog in every single one of his novels, right? There aren't psychos and anarchists and just plain murderers abounding in any of his other novels, right? There aren't slightly flawed heroes and heroines suddenly propelled into situations way out of their league, right? It was almost as if I've read this novel before. (Kids are a lesser priority, but let's face it, dogs are cuter.) ) No breakaway gimmick, no over-the-top message beyond treating dogs well. Unfortunately, it just doesn't stand out that much from any of Koontz's other novels. I mean, there were a lot of murderers and anarchists, there was the healing power of a golden retriever, and there was a mentally handicapped kiddo and some genuinely nice people who were our heroes. I wish I could say I liked this novel more. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Mrs boynton appointment with death![]() ![]() ![]() Sarah is attracted to Raymond Boynton, while Jefferson Cope admits to wanting to take Nadine Boynton away from her husband, Lennox Boynton, and the influence of her mother-in-law.
